Creating and Conveying Your Vision Part 1
Vision and the Impact Zone
Our business will stall if our vision is not personal for everyone who must implement it. Only when people...'taste' it...and 'feel it'...will they personalise it and...'want it'. This is the essential starting point of connecting your people and their Impact Zone performance to your Vision.
The old paradigm does not achieve this and therefore limits the results of your business. It assumes that at best, either everyone somehow 'gets your vision' and 'buys into it', or worse, that it's not important that peoples' performance be propelled by vision, particularly one that is personal. It separates into distinct roles: visionaries (creators of vision), leaders (conveyors of vision) and implementers (executors of vision). This creates results in block 1 or 2 below.
Block 1.
- No vision.
- People have to be managed.
- Minimal performance
- Poor results
Block 2.
- Indistinct vision
- People partly led/managed
- Limited performance
- Moderate results
Block 3.
- Clear personal vision
- People ledø
- Impact Zone performanceø
- Extraordinary results
Without affecting the necessary structure of authority and responsibility, the new standard requires that everyone is a visionary (sees their future with your business's future), leader (takes responsibility for integrating the vision into their thinking) and implementer (executor of their vision) within their own role, thereby creating an entirely new result for your business (see block 3 above).
How is this achieved?
Because we are fully responsible for the results our organisation produces...good or bad, we must now take personal responsibility for influencing the way our people think and act if we are to help them see new possibilities, and make the shift into the Impact Zone. This is leadership.
So, to be confident of achieving the results that will bear your name, it is vital to have an answer to the question: How do I lift the standards of my organisation to the Impact Zone? Like baking a cake, if we get the ingredients right we get the right result....but if we get the ingredients wrong, not matter how we might try to achieve the right result....it will never happen.
To permanently change the way people think about their performance, requires that it must first be important enough to them to do so (and money is never a sustainable motivator). So here is the principle that unlocks the process that we will explore next week. What your business requires to differentiate itself and thrive - can only be provided by the people in your business - when they differentiate themselves and thrive. Only when these needs are integrated and mutually satisfied can the Impact Zone be achieved...and amazing things happen. In fact, the more challenging the demands made on the people in an organisation by a leader who understand this, the more their people are activated to perform. The words....'where there is no vision, the people perish'...Proverbs 29:18, implies that people need, want and will respond to being part of something significant.
